World Cycle 2014: Macedonia

In September 2014 I will be leaving my job of 16 years at Philips to follow my dream. The last 21 years I have lived in Europe – in the Netherlands and Germany, and now it is time to go home. Home to Australia. In Europe I have learnt to love cycling. What better way to finish the European chapter of my life and enter the next than by cycling home?

After leaving the Netherlands, I will be cycling through Germany, then crossing the alps in Switzerland and Italy. I will pass Venezia and Trieste before entering Croatia (via Slovenia), and cycling down the Croatian coast, through Montenegro and then Albania, before entering Macedonia. Here is my planned route through Macedonia.

This will be my first time in Macedonia. Many thanks to Nevenka Dimitrova for tips of where to go and what to see! There are not any bike routes that I could find on the internet. Several people have blogged on their cycle trips through Albania and Macedonia, but have only given approximate routes. My route is based on the  route from Natalie Coleman,  then put into Google Maps. I realize that some of these roads may be very main roads with lots of traffic. I have also read of roads that fizzle out or become mud baths.

Please let me know if you have tips on roads that are passable on the bike, which have less traffic, and are pleasant for cycling. I would be very grateful!

I am also looking at an alternative (longer) route through Albania, Macedonia and Greece (if I have extra time). Check it out here.

The route through Macedonië you have sketches is well doable. The traffic is not that bad and the roads are quite OK, comparable with Belgian standards :). Mud baths you only find more remotely. The climb in between the two lakes is beautiful. I hope you’ll have a little better weather than I had.

    • Hi Gert-Jan.
Thanks. Good to know that its doable. Have you also cycled in Albania? Do you know if the border crossing I have chosen is reasonable?

      All the best!

      Matthew

        Hi Matthew,

Sorry for the delay, I missed your reply, though I thought I indicated that I’d like to receive a notification… never mind. I’m affraid I don’t know enough about the Albanian border crossing to advise you. The locals in Ohrid recommended not to go into Albania at all, but I’m not sure to what extent that’s simply because they are proud of their own country…

        Cheers,

        G-J

      • Thanks Gert-Jan.
We have a really cool route now planned through Albania. Tips from some people that have cycled a lot there. Looking forward to it! 🙂
