World Cycle 2014: Albania

In September 2014 I will be leaving my job of 16 years at Philips to follow my dream. The last 21 years I have lived in Europe – in the Netherlands and Germany, and now it is time to go home. Home to Australia. In Europe I have learnt to love cycling. What better way to finish the European chapter of my life and enter the next than by cycling home?

After leaving the Netherlands, I will be cycling through Germany, then crossing the alps in Switzerland and Italy. I will pass Venezia and Trieste before entering Croatia (via Slovenia), and cycling down the Croatian coast, through Montenegro and through into Albania. Here is my planned route through Albania.

This will be my first time in Albania. There are not any bike routes that I could find on the internet. Several people have blogged on their cycle trips through Albania and Macedonia, but have only given approximate routes. My route is based on the route from Natalie Coleman, then put into Google Maps. I realize that some of these roads may be very main roads with lots of traffic. I have also read of roads that fizzle out or become mud baths.

Please let me know if you have tips on roads that are passable on the bike, which have less traffic, and are pleasant for cycling. I would be very grateful!

I am also looking at an alternative (longer) route through Albania, Macedonia and Greece (if I have extra time). Check it out here.
