Day 34. 171km. Kalix – Pello

Today I was caught in a time warp. I passed 4000km since my start in Eindhoven and crossed the Arctic Circle, where I suddenly grew 16 years younger and met Ed (who cycled the first 60km of my 4000km). Ed also looked younger.

Day 34. 171km. Kalix – Pello. Map and gpx.

It’s been 16 years since I cycled across the Arctic Circle. Back then it was in Norway with Ed on our way from Larvik to Bodø. There is something special about crossing that line. Ed knows it well.

Today was magic. I had the finest forest roads. A long 30km sand road with just me and the forest.

I had the finest lakes.

I had prefect weather. Sun, some clouds. Perfect temperature.

I reached the Tornionjoki River – the border with Finland and Sweden. My route will follow this river for a while. I tried to take some photos but was attacked by some vicious mosquitos. They were able to attach themselves to my leg while I was walking. After walking the 50m to the river from the road, I had dozens sucking my blood.

Then, milestones that make me proud of my trip. I passed the 4000km since I left Eindhoven.

And then crossing the Arctic Circle.

At Övertorneå I made the decision which side of the river (and therefore which country) to cross the Arctic Circle. The next bridge across the river was at Pello – 50km further on. The Swedish side is meant to be more picturesque, although there are no camping grounds. There was some accommodation, but, my plans fell through as they closed at 1900 (!). My fallback plan was to cycle to Pello, cross over into Finland, and camp at the camping ground. That’s just what I did.

By the way, Ed. I wanted to send you a postcard from the Arctic Circle. Would you believe they didn’t have any? I had a polar pizza there, though.
From now onwards arctic-cycler will be cycling in the Arctic. He is happy.
